Medieval walled Lucca is one of the least well known cities to UK holidaymakers and this is simply because the people who write the guide books like to keep some secrets for themselves! Located just northeast of Pisa and within an hour from the airport it is well served by public transport and is the ideal location for visiting Florence, Pistoia, Siena and naturally, Pisa. The historical centre is an absolute wonder, full of pretty little shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants; flag stoned streets, tall palazzo’s, cotto roofs, hidden piazzas and tree lined courtyards. The hotel Universo is situated in one of the most historical locations facing the Art Nouveau styled theatre and the splendid palazzo Ducale: it is considered to be one of the most important monuments of 19th Century Lucca. most of the 60 rooms have views out over the tree lined Piazza Napoleone or the adjacent Piazza del Giglio and some can even see the famous Cathedral. Open all year round, the Hotel Universo is well equipped for both long and short stays in either simple comfort or something a little bit special. In typical Tuscan style they offer a range of rooms to suit all tastes and pockets in an extremely welcoming atmosphere coupled with quiet and attentive service. The recently renovated restaurant offers a cuisine based wholely on local fresh produce and comes highly recommended.
