One of Vegas' most storied names, this downtown hotel is located two miles north of the Strip; the Fremont Street Experience dazzles right outside, nightly. Dating back to 1946, the Golden Nugget was upgraded from its Wild West-saloon past beginning in 1972 when Las Vegas hotelier Steve Wynn took control. It earned luxury-class status in 1984 when Wynn shocked the establishment by removing the gaudy neon encircling the hotel.
